Railway Safety Management
System (SMS)

ERA-compliant, independent railway safety consultancy

We design sustainable, auditable and effective Safety Management Systems (SMS) for infrastructure managers and railway undertakings.

Railway Safety Management System (SMS)

A railway Safety Management System (SMS) is the core management framework that enables infrastructure managers and railway undertakings to manage safety risks systematically, transparently and sustainably. In accordance with the EU Railway Safety Directive (Directive (EU) 2016/798) and the guidance issued by the European Union Agency for Railways (ERA), establishing and operating an SMS is a legal requirement in the railway sector.

  • As SI Global, we provide ERA-compliant SMS implementation, SMS revision and audit preparation services to infrastructure managers, railway undertakings and ECMs (Entities in Charge of Maintenance). We treat the SMS not as a documentation exercise, but as a living, continuously improved system integrated with operational processes.
  • Within the SMS framework we manage hazard identification, risk assessment, risk control measures, operational safety monitoring, KPIs and continuous improvement in a holistic way. We integrate CSM Risk Assessment (CSM RA) and Change Management (CSM) processes into the SMS structure and analyse the safety impact of technical, operational and organisational changes in line with the regulation.
